Planning Team records further successes

Our planning team reports 2 out of 2 successful planning consents at the last Cambridge City Council Planning Committee Meeting, held on 28th February.

Peter Symonds, consultant and acting for developers Miller Homes, helped gain consent for 182 residential units on 2 pieces of adjoining land at George Nuttall Close, Cambridge. The site is located to the north east of the city in Chesterton. The scheme comprises  2, 3 and 4 storey buildings accommodating a mixture of 3 and 4 bedroom units, 55 units (30%) will be affordable housing. The site extends to just over 2.5 ha and will include 0.5 ha of open space which will accommodate a children’s play area as well as a public recreation area. The scheme offers a strong architectural statement to the surrounding area with continuous street frontages constructed in traditional materials. Within the development are pedestrian-friendly landscaped areas and car parking. Outline planning permission for the scheme was granted by the City Council in December 2005.

Justin Bainton also successfully gained consent for a development by Burford Delta for 12 flats at 21-23 Milton Road. The site, which is currently open land of approximately 0.1 ha, is located at the junction of Milton Road and the entrance of the Westbrook Centre. The scheme comprises two blocks of flats. The first, a two storey building reminiscent of a pair of semi detached houses fronting Milton Road, will accommodate 4 two-bed flats. The second building, to the rear of the site, is three storeys and contains 6 two-bed and 2 one-bed flats. There is amenity space to the rear of this block with car and cycle parking set between the two buildings.

A City Council Planning Officer in supporting the scheme, commented that the development, ‘…achieves an imaginative solution to developing the site for residential use which handles the transition between traditional house types and commercial floor space to create dwellings that are distinctive as a piece of town planning/urban design in their own right…’.

Commenting on both planning applications, Justin Bainton says, ‘Naturally we are very pleased for our clients, particularly as George Nuttall Close is Miller Homes’ first major scheme in Cambridge. Architects, London practice Proun, have been praised for their work on the Milton Road scheme, they have produced an innovative piece of architecture’.
